Possible Negative Effects of Homeschooling
1. Knowing how to teach your child the way he or she needs you to…Sleeping until noon every day and then handing out worksheets IS NOT TEACHING. Neither is teaching just ‘glorified babysitting’. Do not be fooled. Teachers do more mental work than you ever dreamed possible. If you aren’t already a teacher or possess teaching abilities, for some people having to learn how to teach, test, grade, etc. is frustrating. It can be done, but it is a lot of work and commitment.
2. Socialization....public school is NOT the answer for perfect socialization, but your child needs to be with others at some point. You MUST find other ways to socialize by joining homeschool groups, clubs, volunteering, dance lessons, music lessons, other private learning, etc. Many homeschooling families stay just as busy as their non-homeschooling neighbors.
3. Lack of free time for Mom/Dad. Your own emotions, stress and personal problems can become worse, IF you let them. Remember, it’s not about you, it’s about them.
4. Loss of income. Only you can decide whether or not your lifestyle will allow your family to get along without the ‘extras’ like a new car, expensive gifts, etc. You can do without new iPads every year…but don’t lose your house because of the decision to stay home!
6. Record keeping. It is very important to keep records, especially when your child approaches the high school years. Most colleges will require a transcript, so make sure you write down everything they've studied. You can buy grade books and even lesson plans--many are online for free--if you just research.
7. Lack of public school technologies. If you have a decent computer or device you should be just fine; but remember to teach technology in order to keep them—and you—up to date.
